Quick answer: There is no wrong finger for a ring. In the U.S., engagement and wedding rings are worn on the left ring finger, while a personal or family ring is often worn on the right ring finger, the middle finger or the index finger. Measure the exact finger you plan to wear it on, and for bands about 5 mm or wider, size up by roughly a quarter to a half size.
There is no wrong finger for a ring. Traditions give each finger a meaning, but the right choice for a personal piece, like a ring carrying a fingerprint or a pet's nose print, usually comes down to two things: what the ring means to you, and where it will be comfortable every day.

Signet tradition & personal styleCommon associations vary by culture and tradition. A personal ring can carry your own meaning on any finger.
- Ring finger (fourth finger). In the U.S. and much of Europe, the left ring finger is the place for engagement and wedding rings. The custom is often traced to the old idea of a "vein of love" running from this finger to the heart. In some countries, including Germany, Russia and India, wedding rings are traditionally worn on the right hand instead.
- Middle finger. The center of the hand. A ring here feels balanced and is easy to see, which makes it a good place for a bolder or wider band.
- Index finger. Historically linked with leadership and confidence, and used for signet rings. Today it is a popular choice for a statement ring.
- Pinky finger. Associated with signet rings and, more recently, with personal style. A pinky ring stays out of the way of most daily tasks.
- Thumb. Less common, and read as independent or unconventional. Thumb rings need a generous size because the knuckle is wide.
Choosing a finger for a personal ring
A ring made from the fingerprints of people you love, or your pet's nose print, does not have to follow wedding traditions. A few practical questions help:
- Will you wear it with other rings? If your left ring finger already has a wedding band, the right ring finger or the middle finger are natural homes for a second meaningful piece.
- Which hand do you use most? Rings on your dominant hand take more knocks and wear. If you work with your hands, your other hand may be the better place.
- Do you want to see it? Many people choose the index or middle finger simply because they can see the prints during the day.

How to get your size right
Each finger is a different size, and so is the same finger on each hand. Always measure the exact finger you plan to wear the ring on.
- Measure at the end of the day, at room temperature. Fingers are smaller in the cold and in the morning, and larger in heat or after exercise.
- Check the knuckle. The ring has to slide over your knuckle and still sit snugly at the base of the finger. If your knuckle is much wider than the base, choose the size that passes the knuckle.
- Your dominant hand is often slightly larger, by around a quarter to a half size.
- Measure two or three times on different days if you can.

Wide bands fit tighter
This is the step most people miss. A wider band covers more of the finger, so it feels tighter than a thin band of the same size. Memori Infinity rings are about 5–6 mm wide. If you are measuring with a thin ring you already own, consider going up about a quarter to a half size. If you are between sizes, the larger size is usually more comfortable.
The most reliable option is a physical ring sizer. When you order an Infinity ring, you can choose Not Sure? Send Me a Ring Sizer and we will include one with your impression kit, so you can confirm your size at home before your ring is made.

Why sizing matters more for an impression ring
A plain band can often be stretched or resized. A ring carrying fingerprints is different: the prints run around the band, and resizing after casting would cut through or distort them. That is why we ask you to confirm your size before production.

Frequently asked questions
Which hand does a wedding ring go on?
In the U.S., the U.K. and much of Europe, wedding and engagement rings are worn on the left ring finger. In some countries, including Germany, Russia and India, they are traditionally worn on the right hand.
Should I size up for a wide band?
Usually, yes. A band about 5 mm or wider covers more of the finger and feels tighter, so many people go up a quarter to a half size compared with a thin ring.
When is the best time to measure my ring size?
At the end of the day, at room temperature. Fingers are smaller in the cold and in the morning, and larger in heat or after exercise.
Can a fingerprint ring be resized?
Generally not. The prints run around the band, so resizing would cut through or distort them. That is why you can choose to have a ring sizer included with your impression kit. Read more about how our rings are made in our guide to lost-wax casting.
